3.7 Communication & Collaboration
Candidates utilize digital communication and collaboration tools to communicate locally and globally with students, parents, peers, and the larger community. (PSC 3.7/ISTE 3g)
Artifact: Class Schoology Page
As a middle school teacher, it is important to communicate as often as possible with both students and parents regarding the happenings in the classroom. Classroom websites are a great way for students to stay up to date on assignments, find materials from class, or even contact their teacher. In today’s ever changing digital world, it is essential to use technology resources such as classroom websites to enrich the learning of our students. For artifact 3.7, I chose to use my classroom website that is located on the county LMS, Schoology.
The use of my classroom website shows mastery of Standard 3.7 as it requires communication and collaboration among students, parents, peers, and teachers. This website helps me keep everyone up to date on homework, classwork, and projects. This also provides me with a way to give students links to tutorial videos, homework help, games, etc. Parent like to be able to see what their children are doing in class, and this is an excellent tool for that. Parents are able to see the work that their students have submitted and also have access to announcements, files, etc. Having a class website or blog is also a great way to involve the community, both locally and globally, in the learning that is happening inside the classroom. It allows parents to take a glimpse inside the daily routine of a middle school student. In addition to each teacher’s website, Adairsville Middle School communicates with students, parents, peers, and the larger community through a Facebook page, Instagram, Twitter, Remind, and the AMS website.
Through the use of this classroom website, I have learned how important it is to keep everyone informed about what is happening in the classroom. While sometimes it can be time consuming to keep the website up to date, I am thankful that I have used it when I need to refer back to something that was done in the past. I have also learned that once a classroom website is started, the community expects it to be maintained, so it is essential to continually add new items. This artifact could be strengthened by adding a discussion post section for students to post comments and questions and for them to respond to one another. I am not always able to respond to their questions right away, so giving them the option to take ownership of their learning is great. Perhaps I can implement bonus points for those students who accurately and appropriately respond to other students.
This artifact has positively impacted student learning in my classroom by providing a means for communication between students, parents, and myself. This website helps students stay up to date on what is happening in class and provides a place for me to include documents and resources that may be useful to my students. This website helps students with organization and allows parents to make sure their students are staying on top of their schoolwork. The impact of this artifact could be assessed by viewing the number of visits each week, providing students and parents with a survey, and even through classroom grades.
*I have included screenshots as my artifact, as my webpage is not accessible to those without a Schoology account.
