Artifact: NCSS Conference 2016
In December 2016, I attended the National Council for Social Studies (NCSS) national conference in Washington, DC. I attended the Friday and Saturday of this 4- day conference. My school nor my district paid for this trip, but I have wanted to attend the national conference for several years, so I made the decision to pay for the trip myself. This conference provided Social Studies sessions from teachers from all over the country. These sessions covered a variety of topics related to social sciences, economics, and government, and also demonstrated new computer programs, software, and other relevant technology for the Social Studies classroom.
This artifact shows mastery of Standard 6.1 because attending this conference allowed for me to demonstrate continual growth in knowledge and skills of not only topics related to content, but also current and emerging technologies. It also allowed me to apply this new knowledge to improve personal productivity and professional practice by trying new things in my classroom and sharing that information with other teachers. Once I returned from this conference, I held a professional learning session to show other Social Studies teachers the materials that I had gathered as well as provide them with information from some of the sessions that I attended while at the conference.
This conference provided me with so much information and ideas. There were so many great speakers that could get information through to the audience in a fun way so that we never lost interest. All the information I learned could help our students in multiple ways to become successful Social Studies students. If I could change anything about this artifact, it would have been to register for some of the outside sessions on the two days leading up to the conference. I feel like this would have been a wonderful networking opportunity and another way to continue to grow as a Social Studies educator.
This artifact positively impacted both student and staff learning. Once I redelivered information to the other Social Studies teachers, they were able to take the new materials and ideas back to their classrooms. This conference is extremely beneficial and allowed for discussion among colleagues about ways to enhance their lessons and incorporate more technology related items, like the resources available from C-SPAN in the Classroom. The impact of this can be assessed by providing surveys for Social Studies teachers regarding their use of the new materials and ideas, as well as classroom observations.
