Artifact: Data Overview
In ITEC 7305, Data Analysis and School Improvement, I created a data overview for Adairsville Middle School’s 8th grade teachers. The overview discussed 8th grade Georgia Milestones results from 2015 – 2017 and focused specifically on social studies. This data overview was a culmination of data obtained from various state websites, our school’s SIP, and our SRI report. Once I collected and analyzed the data resources, I created a PowerPoint presentation to share these findings.
This artifact shows mastery of Standard 2.8 because through creating this presentation, I was able to model and facilitate the use of digital tools by using Excel and PowerPoint to collect, analyze, and interpret results to then communicate with my colleagues during a grade-level meeting. Completing this presentation allowed me to dig into data sources to figure out trends within the 8th grade students at my school. This allowed for great conversation between teachers within the 8th grade to determine effective strategies to improve Social Studies results. By discussing our strengths and weaknesses within the data, we were able to share possible ways to implement appropriate interventions.
Through completion of this artifact, I learned several useful things. First, I learned how to more effectively use Excel to create graphs and charts that will effectively display trends in data. I also learned the location of many useful data sources, which showed me that there is so much data out there that is useful for determining how students are doing. Knowing how to locate important data sources allows me to understand the culture of my school and provides insight into the trends of my school. It is essential to know the climate of the school in which I am working to better serve students. This artifact could be improved by providing a section in the presentation to discuss possible solutions to improve weak performances in Social Studies This would allow teachers to begin thinking about ways to improve Social Studies instruction to improve student performance.
This artifact had a direct impact on school improvement. By sitting down with 8th grade teachers and really discussing our strengths and weaknesses, we were able to figure out possible reasons and solutions to begin improving Social Studies instruction. By opening up a discussion on this topic, student success should begin to grow and hopefully improvements on state tests will be seen in the future. This could be assessed within the next several years by analyzing test results, specifically in Social Studies.
