Artifact: Individual Teacher Technology Assessment
In ITEC 7460, Professional Learning and Technology Innovation, I was able to start using my technology coach skills as I worked one on one with a teacher within my school. I have worked with other teachers in my building prior to this experience, however this time I felt like I was more in a technology coach role while working with this teacher. This artifact includes a Needs Assessment technology survey that was delivered to the teacher in my building to determine her technology use, knowledge, and desire to improve technology use in her classroom. Based on her responses I developed a plan to start coaching sessions with her.
This artifact demonstrates mastery of Standard 5.1 because I was able to conduct and use a needs assessment to determine strengths and weaknesses within my school regarding technology use. After conducting the needs assessment, I was able to use the results to inform the content and delivery of the technology related professional learning program. The needs assessment was created using a Google form. After viewing the results, it was clear that the teacher I was working with was not familiar or comfortable with technology use in the classroom. The survey utilized LoTi style questions to gauge the general level of technology use. I also conducted a second survey that related to adopter levels developed based on change theory. After the surveys were completed, I was able to develop an understanding of the feelings and perceptions of technology use in my building, and was then able to create a coaching plan. The plan consisted of five coaching sessions with me working alongside my colleague.
After completing this Needs Assessment survey and working alongside my colleague, I learned that a lot goes in to determining the best type of coaching sessions for different people. All people benefit from different forms of coaching and it is essential to their understanding that we develop the plan to be specifically geared toward the person we are working with. After viewing the results of the survey, it was clear that the teachers in my building could benefit from some technology coaching, and I was pleased to work one on one with a colleague to improve her technology understanding and use. I learned that listening and understanding each individual teachers wants and needs is essential if we want to drive change. This artifact could be improved by including a form or survey for the teacher I worked with regarding my effectiveness as a coach. I would like to know the areas that I could improve upon so that future sessions are more meaningful and successful.
This experience impacted school improvement and faculty development. The school showed improvement by learning the areas of technology strengths and weaknesses. By realizing areas of strengths and weaknesses, an action plan can be developed to address needs. Teachers were able to realize ways to use technology in their classes to improve student engagement. This can be assessed by administering a survey to students regarding the level of technology use in their classes. Administrators can also perform informal observation of classes to determine the level of technology use.
