5.3 Program Evaluation
Candidates design and implement program evaluations to determine the overall effectiveness of professional learning on deepening teacher content knowledge, improving teacher pedagogical skills and/or increasing student learning. (PSC 5.3/ISTE 4c)
Artifact: GAPSS Review/Current Reality
I completed the GAPSS review as part of ITEC 7460, Professional Learning and Technology Innovation. For this assignment, I utilized the School Improvement Plan (SIP) for Adairsville Middle School to help complete the GAPSS review and current reality of my school. The beginning of this assignment included an interview portion with my assistant principal, specifically addressing areas of improvement as well as strengths of our school. We also discussed the school makeup, funding, and professional learning opportunities. By completing this artifact, I was able to see the importance of assessing a school’s current reality and how to ensure the goals in the SIP are realized.
This artifact demonstrates mastery of this standard because I designed and implemented a program evaluation to determine if our school plan included the appropriate content knowledge, ways to improve teacher pedagogical skills, and if student learning was continually occurring and even increasing. For each standard in the review, I provided specific evidence that supported the standard and determined how the school was performing in a particular area. The standards were ranked based on their level of support. After this assessment was completed, I provided ideas for improvement in areas that may have been weak. The ideas for improvement were not things that would be difficult to implement, but rather small changes that would begin to improve performance.
During the completion of this artifact I learned a lot of information about my school that I was unfamiliar with before. I was able to see exactly what my school was doing to increase student learning, and what forms of professional development were being offered to each content area within the school. This was the first time that I had really read my School’s Improvement Plan on a deeper level and have learned about many of the daily occurrences of my school that I was unfamiliar with previously. I have also learned that it is essential to the success of the school to constantly assess the management of the school as a whole, as well as each individual classroom. Student and teacher needs should always be taken into consideration when professional learning opportunities are suggested. This artifact could be improved by including more areas and more forms of data in the analysis to get a more complete picture of the entire school. It could also be improved by including more visuals to create a clear picture of the details that are discussed in the GAPSS.
This artifact impacted school improvement in my building by allowing me to analyze and understand the sections of my school’s SIP. This allowed me to gain a more solid understanding of all the ways my school supports student learning. Continually improving the school is essential for improving student learning. To assess the impact, the areas assessed on the School Improvement Plan could be measured for growth at the end of the year. If the areas discussed show improvement, then the SIP would be considered successful.
