Prior to this course, I had not really considered what elements are involved for a leader to be a great leader. I learned the difference between great corporate leader characteristics and great school leader characteristics, as well as the difference in transactional and transformational leadership. Principals and administrators have to adhere to guidelines set forth by the GAPSS and LKES and this course gave me a much better understanding of both evaluation tools. I interviewed my Principal and Assistant Principal to gain insight on their perspectives of the school concerning leadership, the school improvement plan, and environment and culture. I analyzed their responses and wrote a paper consisting of my findings, recommendations, and conclusions. The course culminated with writing my Leadership Philosophy, which I found to be a very difficult task as I didn't fully understand the requirements for the assignment.
The readings for the course were helpful. This course has helped me develop a greater insight into effective leadership. It has also helped me learn to detect problems and devise solutions that motivate and inspire all stakeholders toward greater student achievement. Overall, this class has shown me that leadership is not an area in which I would like to focus, but I did enjoy learning more about what it takes to be an effective school leader.
